Lucky beginners

I winning something is a rare phenomenon in the likes of Northern Light and aliens. However, yesterday I had something that I guess can only be called beginner’s luck. We were playing Texas Hold’em at my new job, and I barely knew the names of my colleagues.
As I had never played poker before, and was just learning the rules, I was happily surprised to get good cards already from the beginning. I tried to bet carefully so that I didn’t make a fool out of myself. One of my colleagues was beaten out of the game and I let him watch my cards, but even though he was giving me advices, I rarely took them. I kept getting high cards, and the ten of us were reduced to eight, and then to six. My stack started to get bigger and bigger and at this point my colleagues started looking suspiciously at me. Suddenly I won over the boss, and then there was just me and two more left. Note that all of these guys plays poker regularly, both IRL and online. I realized I had nothing to lose (except for my pride) so I went All In. One of the guys folded while the other guy raised me. When we showed our cards I was thrilled to see that I had beaten him with pair in JJ’s over pair in 10’s.
The other guy seemed to be very annoyed that I was still in the game, and maybe that it was he, in his frustration, was so easy to beat with pair in 9’s over pair in 5’s.
So, I found myself winning over 9 elder men, who all worked with, or took great pleasure in, poker playing.

I think that what this whole thing proves how much luck is involved poker. Or maybe just chance, if those two things aren’t the one and the same. And I reckon there’s nothing wrong with that, since chance applies on everyone. And you still definitely have to be smart with the cards that you are dealt, regardless of if you are being given them because of luck or chance. That is why the betting part is the most interesting part of them all, and every player has to be wise when he folds, calls or raises.
Still, I think it is dangerous to say “this is a new player, therefore he/she must be a bad player”. That is, obviously, not the case.

Internet design

I am an experienced Internet user, like most people under thirty in Western countries. I love to be online, and I am very appreciative of all the things that you can find or do there. But:
I am so tired of the design on certain web pages. We have hit the 21th century more than eight years ago – can’t people catch up? I hate the surface of most online pages, apart from a few exceptions such as Rakeback Lovers and PokerLoco, and I feel that pretty much all the blog designs are hideous. I have tried to make my own webpages in Dreamweaver, but I can admit to not being the best designer either. However, I don’t claim to be. And those who do certainly aren’t. I used to play a lot online poker before, but these days I am too bothered by the look of the web pages. I just can’t focus on the game, it seems. Maybe I am not that disturbed by it when I have brilliant cards or have been winning a lot, but definitely most of the time.

In general, American web sites look better than Scandinavian ones, but it is actually web sites from Germany, Holland and France that looks the best in my opinion. And of course there are always exceptions to the rule – there are some web sites that are just magnificent, and a few of them even belongs to regular people. Young people that just wants to show off their skills. And I don’t mind, I just wish that poker sites and blog services could learn a lesson from this. I think that even Google could try to speed the development up, designwise. Sure, it is fun that sometimes the Google-sign is made out of silly little pictures, but we are all grown-ups, aren’t we? Considering that Google is the largest service on the Internet, couldn’t they try to be a wee bit more easy on the eyes? I wonder what kind of designers work at Google, and what their morning meetings look like.

I guess that I should take a course in web design and just make my own poker site or blog service. Maybe that is to trick to make some decent money. Hey, I think I will just try to find that out…

Diary

I have been working for thirteen years at the same job and I still enjoy my days here very much. The people in here have been coming and going, but almost all of them have been really nice. There is only one person here that has been working longer than I have, and that is a man who is retiring soon. I will miss him, but it is fun with new recruits as well. When I started here my tasks were to make coffee, make copies, keeping the place tidy and so on. But now I have on of the leading positions where I have my own meetings and I am the recruiting officer.
Maybe it is true what they said when I was younger; that the one who waits for something good can’t wait too long!
The same doesn’t go for my husband, who has decided to quit his managing job at a designer store where he has worked for many years. Instead he will study to become an architect.
The education that Stockholm can supply are fairly expensive, but on the other hand they are very good. With the previous experience that he has within interior design, I am sure it will work out just fine.

Our daughter has gotten some problems with math in school. Even if she is a talented child, he has a hard time with numbers. I and my husband have figured out a great technique to practise her math. We play poker with her almost every evening. All of us have always liked poker a lot and both me and my husband plays poker online from time.
We have already noticed a change in her math skills, which makes us very happy.
She wants to go to a central school that is supposed to be one of the best in the country, but I am concerned that the pressure on her will be too heavy there. Popular schools like that always attract people that are a bit obsessed with succeeding and I don’t wish for her to be around that kind of people nor become like that.
Several of her friends have already applied for that school though, so maybe it will be fine.

In the meantime I will follow my husbands interesting development when he starts studying to become an architect!
